Danielle and Victor’s engagements session at the UCONN Law School in Hartford’s historic West End neighborhood was beyond perfect! I mean, maybe I am biased because we started off in my wee little creek known as the Hog River (or Park River as it is currently known) that literally bubbles happily in my back yard. Or maybe I am biased because I have photographed at the Hartford Seminary campus and the UCONN Law School campus many many times before- because I really truly love to! I can say with complete confidence that making the choice to photograph any couple in a space I have worked before may sound like a home run to some couples, but believe me, it turns into a challenge.
Let me explain. When I field prospective client calls, many times they ask if I have worked at a venue or location before. To them, understandably, this translates into a feeling of comfort for them, since I have worked there and know the space. I completely get this and agree; however what this means to me is how can I make this session unique to my clients that are now having their experience here? I don’t ever want to see a space with any type of cookie cutter approach, since every client is unique and new to me!
The UCONN Law School campus, Hartford Seminary and my sweet little Hog River are such places. I have photographed in them for years, during every season. There are certainly certain angles and spaces I have come to favor, for sure! But when a couple like Danielle and Victor come and bring their teacher’s pet A+++ game…? I am over the moon excited and inspired all over again!
This is one of the things that I wish prospective couples realized; this is a partnership. We are a TEAM. I need you to open yourself up to me, to trust me, to let me in. I am not going to magically create perfect, casual natural images of you on my own. You have to feel that with me, first. Right? Then it becomes this amazing partnership of us three laughing, relaxing, getting excited and happy and feeding off of each other’s energy! Then we can create images like I did with Danielle and Victor, or Ellen and Ken’s engagement session or Mackenzie and Steve’s. Check them out! But know this: they trusted me enough to allow me into their comfort zone, they worked through their discomfort enough to let me see who they are together.
Danielle and Victor showed up ready for direction! I decided to start in the river first because the light was perfect. It was brisk and crisp in that slippery little river, but man oh MAN did we have fun!
I loved Danielle’s willingness to scootch right on into the river for some pics! She was fully committed and I was into it!
After drying off and changing we walked down to the Hartford Seminary and UCONN campuses, but had to pop on over to the wild rainforest jungles in Costa Rica first!
This magnificent work of art, AKA The Hartford Seminary is just stunning. Modern and clean and just gorgeous.
Then literally across the street you have one of the most classic and beautiful campuses, the UCONN Law School. I found an interesting history of the school HERE
Danielle and Victor, thank you so much for being so open and willing to share yourselves and your deep and obvious love for one another with me! I knew you were a good time when I met you at your sister Stephanie’s Wedding
I am honored and excited to bow be your photographer and to create magical and classical images for you and your family to have for years to come!
