As a Lord Thompson Manor wedding photographer, Lord Thompson Manor, tucked into the quiet northeastern corner of Connecticut, is the venue I’ve photographed at more than any other in New England. After so many stunning weddings here, it genuinely feels like a second home to me. I know the light at the manor in every season, the best hidden corners for portraits, and the team at the manor well enough that we all work together like family.

Have A Full Destination Weekend, Not Just One Day
One of the best things about getting married at Lord Thompson Manor is that it isn’t just one day, it’s a private weekend on the Manor’s 42 acres, all exclusively yours. Friday brings the rehearsal dinner and a late-night welcome gathering for guests as they arrive. Saturday is your wedding day, start to finish, and can include late night food, a whiskey tasting with cigars. Sunday wraps things up with a farewell brunch with your family and friends before everyone heads home.
Since all of Lord Thompson Manor is reserved just for you and your celebration, there’s no other wedding sharing the property, no strangers wandering through your photos. It’s entirely JUST YOURS for the weekend.
Getting Ready at the Cottage House and The Manor
Getting ready for one half of your couple will happen at the Cottage House. The Cottage House is home to their in house spa space, where hair, makeup, and a little pampering happen. The spa is in a bright, crisp all white space that’s a beautiful visual contrast to the rich, historic tones of the Manor, where your other half will be getting ready with their crew!
If the other half of the wedding party wants somewhere to relax before the ceremony, the Manor’s lower level has a pool table and comfy leather couches which makes for a good time and, honestly, some pretty fun candid photos!
Your Wedding Ceremony, Your Way
At Lord Thompson Manor, you can say your vows outdoors on the historic Olmsted-designed grounds, surrounded by the kind of mature landscaping only a century of careful tending creates.
In the case of inclement weather or during the Winter, you can host your wedding in the Great Hall in front of the french doors. I’ve photographed many ceremonies in the Great Hall with rain falling just outside the windows that were every bit as romantic as an outdoor wedding ceremony.
For colder months, the Manor sets out blankets and heat lamps so nobody’s shivering through your vows.
A Timeline Detail I Love: Toasts Right After the Ceremony
Most venues save toasts for the reception. At Lord Thompson Manor, the wedding toasts happen right after the ceremony. Right after the ceremony, everyone is welcomed down the aisle with a sparkling glass of bubbly. Your guests gather behind you and your wedding party and family, while the people giving the toasts head to the Juliet balcony to toast you both! As your Lord Thompson Manor wedding photographer, I love this timeline adjustment so so so much because it gives your photographer such a front row seat to all of the reactions that happen during your toasts. Having your most important people front and center with you is so special and gives me the best vantage point to get their reactions to all of the touching words being shared about you and your partner.
If it rains, or during the darker autumn and winter months toasts are hosted inside the manor, by the fireplace.
Toasts can also be hosted in the Great Hall, and sometimes the couple will say a few words after their cake cutting! Lots and lots of options and flexibility for everyone.
Another special Lord Thompson Manor wedding touch is the ability for your Lord Thompson Manor wedding photographer (hi, it’s me!) to take a big post wedding toast group photo! Most weddings want a photo like this but don’t ever really have the space to execute it. Thankfully they have it, and have orchestrated the most perfect spot in your wedding day timeline for it to happen.
Golden Hour Lines Up Perfectly With Cocktail Hour
If sunset portraits matter to you, the timing works beautifully. As your very seasoned Lord Thompson Manor wedding photographer, I know that golden hour typically falls right during your cocktail hour, so slipping away for a few minutes of stunning light doesn’t mean missing your own party.
Photo Spots I Will Always Come Back To
Weather permitting, the mossy path in the back of Lord Thompson Manor’s grounds is one of the most magical spots for photos. The staircase inside, the front door, the front of the manor, the side staircases, the fire pit, wow there are just so so many spots that work for magical wedding photos. All of these spots evolve in special ways during different seasons. As your super duper experienced Lord Thompson Manor wedding photographer, you get to reap the rewards of my years of experience at this epic wedding venue.
The Most Magical Night Portrait Spot
Another of my favorite Lord Thompson Manor wedding traditions is the candlelit table Jackie sets up under the tree with the chandeliers! It is such a gorgeous spot for some relaxed portraits with my couples. During your party, we duck out for a few moments or as long as you need!
A Few Practical Things to Know
The Manor and Cottage House together offer 13 beautifully appointed guest rooms, reserved for your wedding party for the whole weekend.
Reception capacity runs up to roughly 150 to 200 guests.
Because it’s your own private estate for the weekend, the bar stays open until 2 AM, so there’s no rush to wrap up the night early.
Most couples book 12 to 24 months in advance, with peak Saturdays in May, June, September, and October going first. If you’re flexible, March, April, November, and December tend to be quieter, less competitive months to book, but don’t wait if you want to have your wedding there, Lord Thompson Manor is super sought after!
