What got you interested in photography?

My journey started when I was 3. Just kidding….

I have always been interested in composition in one way or another. In college, I studied Studio Art and spent a lot of time painting and drawing. Fast forward a few years…One fine day I was looking for something to do, so I picked up my point and shoot and walked around town with it. I tried to be as creative and crazy as I could with my little camera. That’s when it happened. I realized “Wait a second, THIS is what I should be doing!” Sort of like a light bulb went off, that really happens, I swear. So cool. I have been obsessed ever since, in a good way of course.

My favorite cupcake is…

Homemade Funfetti cupcakes with Funfetti frosting from a can. Oh man are they ever yummy.

The best part about my wedding was…

My extremely dreamy husband…and the gazillions of daisies, oh and riding in a VW bug to the ceremony. (Someday when I get married, this will be the case for sure)

Getting goosebumps

Jennifer was the perfect DIY bride: relaxed, creative, and completely willing to roll up her sleeves. Her vision for her and Ryan’s October wedding was elegance: chandeliers, roses, purple, silver and shimmer… and she worked tirelessly to bring it all together. Piece by piece, she booked venues, crafted details, hired vendors and dreamed about her day. It was everything she had hoped for.

The ceremony took place at The Sacred Heart Church in Southbury, CT and then the reception was held at The Candlewood Inn. It was the most beautiful location: giant crystal chandeliers lined the ceiling, and a huge window allowed for a view of the sun setting over the lake. A slider-burger-bar, martini station, seated dinner and lots of dancing made up the party that lasted until the wee hours of the morning.

And then there were the cakes! When Ryan is not fighting fires, he loves to fish. So, as a surprise to him, Jen had a groom’s cake made in the shape of a giant sea-bass, Steel Magnolias style.

The entire day, from beginning to end, was full of love and family — and we were so blessed to be a part of it.

She continued to shine as she slipped into her gorgeous Maggie Sottero gown, and as her veil was put in… and the radiance stayed, not waning one bit, for the entire, beautiful day.

It’s So Ranunculus did a beautiful job with the flowers:

And Chris? He radiated, too… but in a manly, I’m-so-handsome-it’s-breaking-hearts-across-the-world kind of way.

Neyla and Chris have an extraordinary love; it’s like they are connected at the soul. You can tell in the way they look at each other… and it makes my heart smile.

The Farmington Club did a beautiful job with the reception.

The toasts were beautiful and full of emotion.

Nel and Chris: Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for allowing us to be a part of your wedding day!

I know there are love fests in the world, faux and real- but let me tell you something. My team is the real deal. 100% certified really- really- I’d get in a bar fight for you REAL.

It extends beyond my studio- which is big, beautiful and filled with wonderful, amazing people! Candice from Jubilee Events, Beth Chapman from The White Dress by the Shore and Tony from Datura a Modern Garden have turned into the extended, crazy talented family of the studio, and I had to have them along for the day as well.

Let it be said that there were two of my favorite people are missing from this shoot and video- Erik Maziarz and Greg Lewis couldn’t make it, so don’t go thinking they aren’t with me, because they ARE!!! And we missed them dearly.

Enter: Jim Alteri. Not sure I can say anything that can really sum up this guys talent, so maybe I won’t even try! Maybe you should just watch. And see for yourself!!

This past winter Katie Slater, our amazing associate photographer for the studio- had the brilliant idea for us to do a studio family shoot. I was all over it, and why wouldn’t I be?? And decided to host it at the studio since it was fa-reeeezing out!! We all got some of the most amazing family photographs out of the experience… something that everyone should make time for- especially all you PHOTOGRAPHERS!!!!!! Jeez.

Mine is proudly framed in my dining room- 40 x 60 baby! And it is all Mike Romano in his glory… showing up late in his scrabble dabble sweat pants- his whole family was sick and couldn’t come- but he came and photographed and kicked my family’s BUTT! Which is to say that I got my favorite family portrait like, evvveeerrrrrrr….!

Fast forward to now, to this very post- back to earth- and we decided to do the same thing since we had such a great time in December…! ‘cept this time it was hoooot! And I don’t mean hoot, I meant hot but I was exaggerating it because it was sooooo hooooooooot and we was sweatin’!!

Here is Miss Katie Slatie- the child portrait artist extraordinaire… there is something that is just magical about Katie, in general, but also in how she photographs kids and families. To be perfectly honest, once I saw how Katie did her thang…. well let’s just say that was the exact time that I realized how not good at this I was and decided to just focus on weddings!!! Fo REAL… just you wait and see what I am talking about- she will post and you will WEEP!

Speaking of weeping, this here shot by Mike Romano… is so sweet and one of those quick grabs that will forever stay with me- my little guy Jack, Katie’s Jack, and Mike’s boys…you know what I’m saying??

Mike also grabbed this shot of my monkeys, well… being monkeys!

OK, weep fest 2010 here for me. Honestly. In all of the hullabalooooo of the day, after I photographed everyone I took a breather, and then realized that my little family hadn’t been photographed! Always the bride? Never the… oh never mind! Never fear when Mike Romano is near us with a camera!

He will either get blackmail photos of me being a total fool or he will get

and this…. I love how unassuming you are Mr. Romano… thank you so so so much for these images of me and my kids, you can wear those crazy sweat pants every day of the week for all I care! Well.. not at weddings

Because Mike SPANKED ME with them and after seeing the shots he got I was like ‘I am not even going to bother!’ They are so dope.!

But this one is super cute because Dominique and her girl are stunt doubles to the Max LaManna!

This post is actually preceding my New Mexico post- which is a whole total other story that I can’t wait to share!

Now, a side note: we literally threw together this shoot and had only THIRTY MINUTES for the actual shoot itself- I happened to be hosting the PUG meeting at my house that very night and actually showed up late to my own party- since our shoot was over an hour away!

but. I think it was totally worth it!!!

So the third day was really day one of our shoot. Since our couple for the shoot were avid surfers we hit up one of the most beautiful and exclusive beaches in Costa Rica- Playa Escondido! It was such a treat for us! We literally hit the ground running once we got there- timing is such a big thing with surfing so there is no time to dilly dally!

Once Michelle and Alejandro got out, waxed their boards they took off for the surf with a gaggle of photographers running behind! Yes. Very funny to see. While we were running down to the water we saw a few other photographers and a video guy there so in true CT form we all made friends and found they were shooting some of the world’s top surfers for Nike! They saw us coming and were like what in the Holy Hell is going ON!!! Just C10ike and crew from CT way!!!

Michelle is a very talented designer of a bikini line so I was much obliged to do a mini fashion shoot for her!

I got a little dirty…..talk about a photographers nightmare- salt water and sand! And c 10ike LOL

Now I normally try not to show image sin camera, because to me, they are not complete. But Michelle was DYING and so I had to oblige! She was thrilled!

Sara had the great idea of having them get on the surf board- and it got a little steamy! After that we had them just cuddle here, you know it, you love it- the c 10 ike modified prom baby!!!!!

Not only do I love my job, but I love the people that I work with. How many people do you know that love both? I consider myself lucky, blessed, honored and just plain old PSYCHED to be able to say this!

Many of you know Katie Slater, an incredibly talented associate photographer with the studio. Well Miss Katie is quite the family portrait photographer and she had the brilliant idea of having a Studio Family Portrait day. Meaning that we would all converge on the studio, smartly dressed families in tow and have a day of shooting each other’s families! Now for me, I was excited to be able to really promote the photographer’s that shoot for the studio- because really, what better way to see how they are with clients than by being the client yourself! But the other bonus / bad thing about being a photographer- you take great photos of other people’s families but more often than not, have none of your own family to show!

Another added bonus: all of us being able to spend time with our families and our work families- a combination that is so rare I can’t say that it has ever happened before!

And was still incomplete- (Mike’s family was sick so they couldn’t make it, but we all missed you guys!)

The cherry on top? The amazing Catie Bane from Dana Bartone & Co. came to do the ladies makeup! Talk about feeling like a superstar….. BIG huge thanks to Miss Catie and her amazing talent!!
