One of my favorite times in my season is the time I get to sit back and reflect and look at all of the weddings I photographed over the year… There are so many happy memories, in-love couples, exciting moments, color, rain… and mostly? Laughter! To all of my 2011 clients- thank you so much for having us be a part of your wedding day!

This best of contains some favorite shots from my main man Mike Romano and my main third lady Jazzy. Thank you both for being such loyal and hard working people, and such talented photographers!! I love you both!!

While 2011 wasn’t my most prolific year, it was my most rewarding yet. When I was forced to book fewer weddings because of increasing demands from my other career, my growing family and a new home (yet very OLD – think Tom Hanks and The Money Pit), I was down-and-out and felt like I had been benched. Like I would be left in the dust by this fast paced and constantly changing industry. How would I stay motivated? How could I stay fresh?

What I failed to realize though, is that for the first time I would be able to stop and smell the roses. For the first time in six years of shooting weddings, I wasn’t overwhelmed by double-headers, late nights editing, and trying to make enough time for the other priorities in my life. And with more time for my other roles as a husband and a father, I found even more satisfaction from my photography. I never ran into that middle of the season creative wall that every photographer dreads, and I was able to devote more time to getting to know my clients than ever before. Thank you to my amazing clients, and thank you to Carla’s irreplaceable studio staff working behind the scenes, for letting me realize this level of satisfaction.

So while my favorites from 2011 might come from a limited quantity, for me, each image means that much more.

You know what feeling I love?

That feeling when your heart skips a beat and your breath gets caught in your chest and your eyes get a little watery. That’s the feeling that I love. And honestly, that feeling happened to me more times than I can count in 2011. From belly laughs to nervous giggles, from a single tear to tears streaming, from a tiny hug to full on bear hugs, and from perfect sunny days to catastrophic unseasonal snow storms, 2011 was literally the best wedding season yet. I am so thankful to my wonderful couples for putting their faith and trust in me to photograph their weddings. I love you guys! xo

new years eve. 2011. there i was…in the middle of the bushnell stage with carla as balloons fell from above and my camera dangled from my neck. my typical reaction ensued: goosebumps. really. how the h-e-double hockey sticks did i end up here? how did i get so lucky? holy smokes.

when the wedding ended we tailgated in the parking lot with caffeine free diet cokes. as i drove home that night with sore tootsies, i thought about the year that had just gone by. again… goosebumps.

2011 was pretty much my favorite year ever. so far at least. i became a member of the most supportive, creative, hilarious, crazy studio on the face of the planet. i made new friends, lots of them. i shot my very first season of weddings. i choked up during first dances, cracked up during bridesmaids toasts, got involved in a few dance battles, and sported my sweet “wedding hair”. most importantly, i photographed some very lovely people. people who have inspired me. for that alone, i am the luckiest girl.

i can only hope that 2012 is just as much fun for me, the studio, and my lovely clients. thank you so very much for your support. xo

best of weddings 2009

I am so excited to say that our best of 2009 weddings highlight slide show is here for your viewing pleasure! Big props to Graham for putting it together, I am so sorry I ruined this song for you!

Watching this made me all melancholy as I looked back at our year here at the studio- and I celebrated all of the changes that we have undergone! From the total completion of my renovated studio space, my amazing studio manager and bff Dominique to the addition of our extremely talented associate photographers- Erik Maziarz; Katie Slater and Graham Scobey to the just absolute perfect melding of shooting styles of me and Mike on a wedding… I can say with total confidence that I would do it all again, exactly the same.

One thing I have learned in my travels in life is to surround yourself with people who are smarter than you, better than you at what you do and who laugh at my absurd humor (thank you Reilly) They just can’t have better hair, cuz that’s all I got!

So without further blathering on from yours truly…

Class of 1984 trailer A little while back Mike and I shot Bob 2.0 and the lovely Mrs. 2.0 (aka Jen) in some farm country n stuff! Well I made a little slide show for the 2.0′s- to a song that I think is only fitting since they are true high school sweethearts!!

As many of you may already know my big guy Mike is expecting a baby in September. Now when I found out that Kim was pregnant from that very second on I KNEW that I was going to do something super special and super top-secret for Mike. That was WAAAAYYY back in January, so I have been keeping this from Mike for a looong time and I was about ready to burst with excitement I just couldn’t wait for it!

Not sure if you notice or not but I tend to get a little excited about shoots….

So Kim and I planned our super top-secret rendezvous to take place in the beginning of July at Watch Hill- Mike and I had just shot our clients Jen & Paul there and I was just in love with the late afternoon light and the beach and the waves and the lighthouse and cool little duney-hoo ha fence and the life guard chair… little did Mike know how hard I was scoping for locations each time we went out on an e shoot!

I had Kim bring several different changes of clothes and some baby pictures of her and Mike and some other fun things for our shoot. We had so much fun and were just so pumped to pull one over on the ever-observant Mike Romano! It is almost impossible to do and it all almost came crashing down but I did some tricky verbal maneuvering and saved the surprise in the end!

I gave Mike and Kim their book yesterday and just got all choked up (but I did not weep, surprisingly Robert Norman!!! ) just watching them look over their book. The looks on their faces said it all for me, and most importantly I know how much Mike appreciates it.

Now as soon as I saw those cute plaid shorts on Mike’s blog I was hoping she would bring them to our shoot! How bad-a$$ is she? Yeah, I’m pregnant but I am CUTE!!

I was really loving these facing the ocean shots. Yes, I know it is not hitting you over the head that she is pregnant but that’s OK!

I know how my boy loves his reflection shots so I knew I had to rock some. I also Love love love them and it was fun to shoot a different perspective of a maternity shot

I knew I wanted to use this fence and really like the way that Kim is leaning on it!

I had asked her to bring some blue clothes or accessories since she is having a boy and I am all about gender stereotyping early on! The blue dress blue sky blonde hair combo is really pretty!

I love the next series here- the light was just awesome

This may be my favorite shot of the whole shoot…. there is just something about it- the color, the way her toe is really delicately pointed, I think it all just works

I also love this shot- it feels very fashiony but comfortable

Yeah, I am sure I broke some unspoken beach law by hopping over but I did NOT go into the dunes! I just wanted to shoot through the fence and frame Kim. Is that so wrong?

I love this kind of ‘maternity shoot rule’ breaking shot here- I know these are imagined rules that I am making up but I felt like I had to have the belly outlined all nice and here I just blew it out! I love it. I also like how the fence is all subtle along the bottom edge of the frame and by shooting wide open I helped fuzz it out nicely

Yesterday a bunch of us headed over to a great seminar by Mike Colon & Bob Davis at the airport. It was full of inspiring ideas and great technical advice. I left feeling motivated and like I was on the right track with my work, which is a wonderful feeling….

During the seminar Cynthia Brown decided to throw & I to the paparazzi for Bob Davis’ lighting demo on rim lighting during the first dance! It was so special and emotional, thanks Steve! Too bad my toes hurt from you stomping on them though!

Our new buddy and incredible photographer Kenny Kim was kind enough to give me some of the awesome and super romantic shots of me and Steve taken by Bob Davis and Kenny himself, they are pretty funny!

After the seminar we took them out to Mayor Mike’s for a nice dinner and some conversation.

Renee trained me well!!

This morning I ran my second of this 2007 holiday season with my old friend & trainer Renee and my new friend and fellow Nikon shooter Mike! Christopher Martin’s 5K race in New Haven was outstanding- in so many ways- great energy, a super flat course, hilarious costumes and at the end? FREE BEER!!! Can’t really get too much better than that. So, I had some lofty goals going into this race after the Branford 5K- I wanted to shave off some time on my pace. I had run a 12:59 mile pace on Thanksgiving and so my goal for this one was 12:30. Well, I totally met and passed my goal!! You’ll have to watch the slide show to see what it was but I still can’t believe I did it!!
My buddy Stevedepino.com ran this one as well but since he is light years faster than me he ran with his friends and got a killer time under his belt. We are now researching our next 5K and have plans to run a 10K in the spring. You can bet your sweet cheeks there will be a serious C 10 ike shirt made up special for that race!!

The Bonfire of the Vanities hd

In preparing for this race Renee helped me come up with some training goals for myself for the 2 weeks in between races- 3 days of running mixed with 3 days of lifting and mild cardio with one day off. The second week we added one nutritional goal into the mix, nothing crazy but something manageable to help me keep up the weight loss. So far so good- I am due for a weigh-in next week, so we’ll see what’s going on there!

I have to say I got a little psyched out today- but I kept coming up with mini goals like pass that 100 year old man or that 4 year old child, nothing fancy. Mostly I just kept moving forward and tried to step it up. Mike joined us today kind of spur of the moment and he did great! He even sent me a motivational text during the race! It made me laugh out loud.

I am off to shower up, I decided to make and post this slide show before and now I am offending myself!
